Byetta (exenatide) is an injectable medication used to help manage type 2 diabetes, along with eating an appropriate diet and getting regular exercise. It is often used along with other treatments to help control blood sugar, but may also be used on its own.

In most cases, the medication is administered by injection with a single-use, disposable pen twice per day to help regulate blood sugar. It is not an insulin replacement; patients with type 1 diabetes or with diabetic ketoacidosis should not buy Byetta.

Taking Control of Diabetes

Byetta helps manage type 2 diabetes in several ways:

  • Encourages the pancreas to secrete insulin;
  • Inhibits glucose production by the liver;
  • Decreases glucose absorption in the gut.

Byetta must not be confused with Bydureon; though the active ingredient is the same, Bydureon is given once per week, while Byetta is administered twice per day:

  • Each Byetta dose comes in a disposable pen which can be discarded after administration.
  • Most patients start with 5 mcg twice daily; if the medication seems to be working and there are no serious side effects, this may be increased to 10 mcg twice daily.
  • Doses should be at least 6 hours apart.
  • It must be taken within 60 minutes prior to a meal; it should not be administered shortly after a meal.
  • Injections should be given subcutaneously into the stomach, upper arms or upper thighs; do not inject into muscle or veins.

Blood sugar should be monitored carefully during the beginning of treatment to ensure it is working; the medication is not effective for everyone.

Many individuals experience moderate to significant weight loss during treatment. Considering the potential severity of some of the medication's side effects, patients are not advised to buy Byetta solely as a weight-loss aid. There are numerous alternatives available.

Treatment may be stopped eventually if lifestyle changes alone are sufficient to control blood sugar; otherwise treatment may continue indefinitely.

Before Taking Byetta

Patients with certain medical conditions should not buy Byetta without first discussing potential risks with a doctor:

  • History of hypoglycemia
  • History of liver, kidney, gallbladder or pancreas issues
  • History of gallstones or alcoholism
  • Taking other medications which lower blood sugar
  • Pregnant or breast-feeding

Note that the medication may cause oral birth control pills to be less effective; alternative methods should be used while treatment continues.

Most side effects associated with Byetta are mild gastrointestinal upsets, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. Mild headache and jitteriness might also be experienced. These symptoms, if they occur at all, very often disappear as treatment continues.

Unfortunately some patients experience more severe adverse reactions. Warning signs that warrant medical attention include:

  • Severe pain in abdomen, particularly in the upper-right area under the ribs
  • Stomach pain that radiates to the back
  • Stomach pain lasting more than 5 hours
  • Difficulty breathing or urinating
  • Blood in feces or pale, clay-colored stools
  • Extreme hunger, weakness, dizziness or confusion (hypoglycemia)
  • Severe headache
  • Rapid heart rate

Regular, in-depth checkups at a doctor's office are highly advisable to monitor for developing side effects which might not produce noticeable symptoms until the problem is relatively serious.
